An unmissable opportunity
For several years, Dave Mountford and I have asked ourselves how the relationship with publicans and their main contact with their pub-owning company, the Business Development Manager (BDM), actually worked.
So when we were given the chance to interview an ex regulated pub company BDM, (Punch Pubs) who would talk to us honestly and openly about his experiences in the industry it was too good an opportunity to miss.
We hope you find the results, interesting, revealing and most of all practical in terms of managing the relationship you have with your own BDM.

The key to running a pub is having good management team in charge
You would think that recruiting the right people, training them correctly and supporting them as true partners in the operation of the pub would be a priority for pub companies, but as revealed here this isn’t always the case.
As you can see in the first interview of our five-part series, this is not a criticism of pub tenants across the UK, but it does show that you may not be given honest and true information from the pub company, who may be trying to get someone into that pub and paying rent at any cost.
Just because you are joining the hospitality industry does not mean that the basic fundamentals of running a small business go out of the window.
What it does show is that you shouldn’t take anything at face value. Do your own thorough research, question the figures that are put in front of you and make sure you are taking a good business decision, not one based on a romantic ideal and false information that you will live to regret as many others have done!
Please watch the series and join the Forum of British Pubs in our support of the people who run pubs and bars. Become a member today and get essential business advice and guidance or you can sign up to support our campaigns for free. We need YOUR voice to make real, meaningful changes.
